Biography

Kishan Singh Gargajj was born in Birring, in the Jalandhar area, in 1886. He served in the British Indian Army, then left military service and joined the Akali reform agitation. With Master Mota Singh he was linked to early discussions at the Sikh Educational Conference in Hoshiarpur in March 1921. He organized a Chakravarti Jatha in late 1921 and became a principal leader when radical groups combined as the Babbar Akali Jatha in 1922. The Babbar Akalis broke from the mainstream non-violent Gurdwara Reform campaign and used armed resistance against colonial rule. He was sentenced to death in the conspiracy case and hanged at Lahore in February 1926. The pin is Jalandhar, his birth district. Lahore is the trial and execution place, not his home.
